This is a really clever feature that could be easily overlooked. When you’re looking at the pictures you’ve taken, and particularly when you want to diagnose any focus issues, it would be really good to be able to see what focus point the camera has used.
Well you can. You’ll find this option in the Playback menu under Playback display options. There’s a checklist of information you can display and this includes Focus point. When this box is ticked, images displayed in playback mode have an overlay showing the focus point used, picked out as a red rectangle in just the same way it is in the viewfinder when you shoot.
There is just one thing to be aware of. This shows where the camera was focused at the moment the focus was locked. If you’re one of these people (like me) who habitually uses the centre focus point, locks focus and reframes, this display could be misleading – it might display the centre focus point, even though you focused on a subject that’s now off-centre.
