AF Assist lamp: This illuminates in low light to help the autofocus lock on to your subject. It also blinks when you’re using the self-timer and it’s used to reduce red-eye when using the built-in flash.
Lens release button: Press this in to release the lens locking mechanism, then twist the lens to the left (seen from above) to remove it.
Fn button: You can configure this to access settings you use often. It works in two ways – a single press activates one of four functions while pressing and holding while turning the command dials offers others.
Pv button: This activates the depth of field preview, stopping the lens down to the lens aperture that’s going to be used when you press the shutter release so that you can judge the depth of field visually.
Sub-command dial: That’s what Nikon calls it. You or I might call it the ‘front dial’. It’s used for a whole variety of adjustments, depending on the mode you’re in or the button you’re holding down.
